Tires are converted into recycled rubber in several ways. Some manufacture their playground surfacing from a process of abrasion; known as the ambient process.

Tires are first shredded and granulated, and run through a series of magnets that aim to remove most of the metal wire which is placed in tires during their original assembly.

The Hydroshok system adds an extra layer of cushion which means our fields consistently have lower GMAX ratings. Sandwich Style Backing

DBS: when it rains, it drains. Our DBS backing is designed with tens of thousands of especially heat-perforated drainage holes. This added drainage assures the fastest water evacuation and also guarantees the removal of contaminants (unlike our competitors' backings that filter water solely through the backing). Additionally, this design allows for easier installation and reduction of fraying while simplifying the cutting and gluing of lines. Because of the extra weight, thickness, strength and strategic drainage, our turf lays flatter, lasts longer, and drains better than any other backing.

Testing

A backing is essentially the foundation for the turf fibers. Several factors determine the value of a backing component. DBS is tested for stability and strength as well as its susceptibility to shrinkage, creeping, and shearing. Across the board our DBS proves that it outperforms the competition and is an absolute necessity for any field installation.

Stability Testing

To compare performance of dimensional stability in all directions, the patented DBS backing was tested against several leading competitors. The backings were tested for elongation, warp and weft, at low force, at an angle of 45 degrees. The stability of the patented DBS backing proved significantly superior in all directions.

Strength

F-Max strength test determines the units of force required to break a fabric, which should not occur during normal use. The backing is stretched by 5% of their original length, warp, and weft. The patented DBS, triple sandwich-style, primary backing and high-grade polyurethane secondary backing is shown to be the industry's heaviest and most durable, demonstrating outstanding strength in this test.

Shrinkage

Shrinkage tests subject the backing DBSs to a wide range of temperatures and measure the DBS's reaction. Creeping

The process for making synthetic turf can be related to process that makes products such as polyester and nylon. The chemicals used to make the artificial grass blades are melted and fed through a spinneret head (similar to a large showerhead) where it then forms a long fiber. The fiber then solidifies by some cooling process. Variations and additives used during the manufacturing process of fibers can alter the characteristics and end uses of the fibers tremendously. While usually being manufactured with a smooth texture and medium luster it can be changed to meet the needs of the consumer. Blue Sky Turf products are tailored to the specific weight or density to which the customer requires. The same is with the color whatever color is needed can be produced.

The manufacturing process of turf is done by technicians that will use many different machines and process to get the final product. The artificial grass in the turf is made from a process used in manufacturing called extrusion. the extrusion process uses a one-piece die where a material is forced through a hole that has a specific shape. The shape it goes through is the shape the strand will be. Different shapes of extrusion on the turf grass can have different effects which includes, the surface area, traction and the tensile strength. The compounding is the mixing of polymer, pigments, UV and process stabilizers, and several additives. This step is important in the fact these mixtures control the color, texture, consistency, and durability. These are predetermined based on the future use and mixed to meet the criteria of the needs. Our technicians pay close attention because one measurement off can ruin the whole batch.

Next on to the extrusion this process involves heating the material under pressure and mixing. This process continually stretches the material to give it its strength. The sheet will then be jerked or cut in partially for extra stability in the final product. These are held together by the base structure .After these steps are completed the material is ready for tufting or knitting; to be made in huge rolls which will weigh about 6 kg each to be later installed. The tape will be twisted in a regular number of twists per meter for better run ability during tufting / knitting. While all this is going on there are constant quality checks to make sure the turf will be up to par.

The Astroturf phenomena was to continue for nearly 30 years and soon every major college and high school in the country had the product. Unfortunately, there was a dark side to Astroturf and it was the cause of scores of injuries of all kinds. A new injury called turf toe was accredited to Astroturf. But, that wasn't all. Because the seams were sewn and therefore left a ridge, several athletes injured their knees and ankles because of the seams. Many of these football field turf related injuries were career ending and left athletes young and old crippled for life.

Additionally, the Astroturf product was extremely abrasive because of its nylon knitted fiber make up, besides being very hard as it was usually installed over an asphalt base. This football field turf product was hardly an answer or replacement for the old natural turf fields. Even the play of the ball was different, especially when it was wet. The surface was extremely slippery and not even close to real football field turf playing conditions. By the time the 1990's came around, Astroturf had such a negative connotation that nearly all schools and colleges were changing their fields back to natural turf. Even the pros were going back to natural. There were just too many injuries. In the era of very expensive players and football as big business, it just wasn't acceptable to have so many players get hurt that badly due to the turf.

Even though the conversions and maintenance were very expensive, schools had no choice. They all had to bite the bullet and go backward, because although natural football field turf had many negatives, the positives still outweighed the benefits of synthetic football field turf.

Just when things were at their lowest and Astroturf had been equated with danger and poor play, a new turf was introduced to the market. It was completely different. This product was made of a soft polyethylene fiber rather than a coarse nylon. It also had an all rubber infill unlike the no infill Astroturf system. The football field turf system drained through rather than over the top and didn't need a large crown like Astroturf. Additionally, the G-Max or shock attenuation was almost exactly like natural turf in pristine condition rather than a rock hard surface like Astroturf.

It was a polypropylene fiber with a sand infill. It was also very abrasive due to the unforgiving fiber and sand infill. After all, sand is the main ingredient in sand paper. The result was a debacle.

It set back the concept of using artificial soccer turf by 20 years. No one in the sport want any part of it, and rightly so.

If all of this were bad enough, the play of the surface was terrible. It was impossible to closely mimic nature turf and control the speed, roll and bounce of the ball. This was crucial to make the game realistic to natural turf. Therefore, players, especially the good ones, would have nothing to do with artificial soccer turf and cursed its very existence.

Then, in the late 1990's, the turf's harshest critics began to notice some of the evolutionary developments that were taking place in the artificial soccer turf industry. And, FIFA, the ruling body of international soccer, became interested in the use of artificial soccer turf for developing countries because they saw it as a way to spread the popularity of the game to these countries and make the sport's world-wide appeal even bigger.

They came up with testing procedures for the criteria of ball bounce, roll, speed and G-max which would have to be met in order for the new artificial soccer turf products to be accepted for international play, including World Cup events. Companies that manufactured artificial soccer turf products that met the testing criteria would be able to be used internationally for soccer events of all kinds.   The installation of nearly 1,000 new synthetic turf fields in 2009 conserved an estimated 500 million gallons of water and reduced the use of fertilizers by well over 1.25 million pounds.

  Using crumb material from granulated used tires for sports field infill has afforded the opportunity to recycle 25 million used auto tires per year that would otherwise end up in U.S. landfills.

  Synthetic turf does not harbor bacteria or support potentially harmful insect infestations.

• Increased Playing Time - Extension of the playing seasons for all sports, and the ability to use the surface in all weather conditions. Synthetic turf can be utilized around 3,000 hours per year with no “rest” required, more than three times that of natural grass. This translates into increased practice and play time as well as the valuable flexibility to use your field for other events.
