Sensors have been used in the lighting industry for many years now, but with standard light fixtures they tend to decrease the life expectancy and efficacy of the bulbs and ballasts. Daylight

Blue Sky's photocell sensors now give our clients the ability to put the energy of the sun to work for them. Through a procedure called “daylight harvesting,” our sensors will either dim or turn off the fixtures in response to the amount of natural light in and around your facility according to presets that can be easily administered. This technology liberates the customer from concerns about consumption management. At dusk the lights will transition on and at dawn they will fade out, in the meantime providing additional savings every day because the LED's will not be running at full capacity most of the time.

Occupancy

Blue Sky's occupancy sensors operate on a “dual stage” function, allowing for a gradual dimming or timing out of the fixtures. For indoor applications that receive unpredictable foot traffic, this utility removes the need for turning the lights on and off upon entry and exit, respectively, making this another convenient addition to our LED product line. For outdoor applications that get minimal foot traffic at night but must be active for security reasons, this will have the LED operate at lower power levels until the sensor is triggered. This dramatically increases consumption control by regulating the LED's output in a way that could not be achieved by fluorescent or HID fixtures.

Hybrid

Blue Sky's hybrid sensors bring together the best of both worlds. By combining daylight and occupancy sensing technology, it can operate at full efficiency with the least possible amount of manual operation. Optics

Traditional lighting is inefficient because the light output is not controlled and light is diffused in many directions other than the fixtures' target areas. Blue Sky's LED fixtures are designed to direct the light with precision, preventing it from scattering back into the fixture where the light becomes trapped, which wastes valuable energy. We use specially designed optics when specific light levels or beam angles are needed.

Delivered Lumens

A common question in the lighting industry, based on the matter of energy consumption, is an inquiry about the ratio of lumens to watts in a given product. A strong fiber requires a strong backing. Blue Sky utilizes the patented all-rubber infill DBS that is powered by the famous DBS backing system, which is a dimensionally stable backing system that is excellent for all types on infill and non-infill systems. DBS backing provides multi-directional stability which prevents the turf from stretching, shrinking or moving horizontally, diagonally, or vertically.

Sandwich Style Backing

DBS: when it rains, it drains. Our DBS backing is designed with tens of thousands of especially heat-perforated drainage holes. This added drainage assures the fastest water evacuation and also guarantees the removal of contaminants (unlike our competitors' backings that filter water solely through the backing). Additionally, this design allows for easier installation and reduction of fraying while simplifying the cutting and gluing of lines. Because of the extra weight, thickness, strength and strategic drainage, our turf lays flatter, lasts longer, and drains better than any other backing.

Testing

A backing is essentially the foundation for the turf fibers. Several factors determine the value of a backing component. DBS is tested for stability and strength as well as its susceptibility to shrinkage, creeping, and shearing. Across the board our DBS proves that it outperforms the competition and is an absolute necessity for any field installation.

Stability Testing

To compare performance of dimensional stability in all directions, the patented DBS backing was tested against several leading competitors. The backings were tested for elongation, warp and weft, at low force, at an angle of 45 degrees. The stability of the patented DBS backing proved significantly superior in all directions.

Strength

F-Max strength test determines the units of force required to break a fabric, which should not occur during normal use. The backing is stretched by 5% of their original length, warp, and weft. The patented DBS, triple sandwich-style, primary backing and high-grade polyurethane secondary backing is shown to be the industry's heaviest and most durable, demonstrating outstanding strength in this test.

Shrinkage

Shrinkage tests subject the backing DBSs to a wide range of temperatures and measure the DBS's reaction. As compared with standard polypropylene backing DBS the patented DBS backing far surpasses the competition. DBS demonstrated a lower sensitivity to varying extreme temperatures and guarantees superior dimensional stability.

Creeping

Creeping tests stretch the backing DBSs with a constant tension over an extended period of time. After 3 months the backing is revisited and researchers measure the units change. DBS showed the lowest signs of creeping further demonstrating the stable performance of our DBS.

Shearing

This measurement determines the force needed to deform a fabric by 1 inch. The backing demonstrated the highest measurable resistance to shear, ensuring the highest dimensional stability of the total backing.

Artificial Turf Testing Video

Turf manufacturing is seen by many as a clean recycling process that will help better the future. The popularity of synthetic surfaces is on the rise for public parks, schools landscaping and in professional sports arenas. This means that the manufacturing of artificial grass is also increasing to meet the demand.

Our synthetic grass is manufactured in a state-of-the art plant located in Georgia. We ensure the turf's quality is manufactured at the highest level. Our plant features the latest in tufting and coating technologies, guided by experienced technicians to ensure our product is consistent and meets the industry's highest standards.

The process for making synthetic turf can be related to process that makes products such as polyester and nylon. The chemicals used to make the artificial grass blades are melted and fed through a spinneret head (similar to a large showerhead) where it then forms a long fiber. The fiber then solidifies by some cooling process. Variations and additives used during the manufacturing process of fibers can alter the characteristics and end uses of the fibers tremendously. While usually being manufactured with a smooth texture and medium luster it can be changed to meet the needs of the consumer. Blue Sky Turf products are tailored to the specific weight or density to which the customer requires. The same is with the color whatever color is needed can be produced.

The manufacturing process of turf is done by technicians that will use many different machines and process to get the final product. The artificial grass in the turf is made from a process used in manufacturing called extrusion. the extrusion process uses a one-piece die where a material is forced through a hole that has a specific shape. The shape it goes through is the shape the strand will be. Different shapes of extrusion on the turf grass can have different effects which includes, the surface area, traction and the tensile strength. The compounding is the mixing of polymer, pigments, UV and process stabilizers, and several additives. This step is important in the fact these mixtures control the color, texture, consistency, and durability. These are predetermined based on the future use and mixed to meet the criteria of the needs. Our technicians pay close attention because one measurement off can ruin the whole batch.

Next on to the extrusion this process involves heating the material under pressure and mixing. This process continually stretches the material to give it its strength. The sheet will then be jerked or cut in partially for extra stability in the final product. These are held together by the base structure .After these steps are completed the material is ready for tufting or knitting; to be made in huge rolls which will weigh about 6 kg each to be later installed. The tape will be twisted in a regular number of twists per meter for better run ability during tufting / knitting. While all this is going on there are constant quality checks to make sure the turf will be up to par.

Change for the better...

Artificial American Football Field Turf

Football has been played on soggy, muddy or rock hard natural turf fields for decades. The game was brutal and the outcome was often decided by the condition of the field. Occasionally, the football field turf conditions would be optimum and then the game was a joy. However, more often than not the football field turf was either over used and beat up, or just not up to par.

The conditions of the field weren't helped by the fact that the football field turf natural pitches were often used for many different sports as well as practices. This super abundance of play beat up the fields badly and created terrible and unsafe playing conditions. This problem continued until the 1960's when the first synthetic football field turf was created. It was to be called Astroturf because it was used in the first indoor domed field in Houston, Tx. This synthetic football turf would revolutionize the industry and within a few years, hundreds and then thousands of football field turf fields would be converted to this unique product.

The Astroturf phenomena was to continue for nearly 30 years and soon every major college and high school in the country had the product. Unfortunately, there was a dark side to Astroturf and it was the cause of scores of injuries of all kinds. A new injury called turf toe was accredited to Astroturf. But, that wasn't all. Because the seams were sewn and therefore left a ridge, several athletes injured their knees and ankles because of the seams. Many of these football field turf related injuries were career ending and left athletes young and old crippled for life.

Additionally, the Astroturf product was extremely abrasive because of its nylon knitted fiber make up, besides being very hard as it was usually installed over an asphalt base. This football field turf product was hardly an answer or replacement for the old natural turf fields. Even the play of the ball was different, especially when it was wet. The surface was extremely slippery and not even close to real football field turf playing conditions. By the time the 1990's came around, Astroturf had such a negative connotation that nearly all schools and colleges were changing their fields back to natural turf. Even the pros were going back to natural. There were just too many injuries. In the era of very expensive players and football as big business, it just wasn't acceptable to have so many players get hurt that badly due to the turf.

Even though the conversions and maintenance were very expensive, schools had no choice. They all had to bite the bullet and go backward, because although natural football field turf had many negatives, the positives still outweighed the benefits of synthetic football field turf.

Just when things were at their lowest and Astroturf had been equated with danger and poor play, a new turf was introduced to the market. It was completely different. This product was made of a soft polyethylene fiber rather than a coarse nylon. It also had an all rubber infill unlike the no infill Astroturf system. The football field turf system drained through rather than over the top and didn't need a large crown like Astroturf. Additionally, the G-Max or shock attenuation was almost exactly like natural turf in pristine condition rather than a rock hard surface like Astroturf.

Synthetic Soccer Turf

Soccer is by far the most popular sport on our planet. In fact, it is an obsession in most countries. Over the decades, especially overseas, the thought of playing soccer on any other surface other than natural pitch was ridiculous. People would laugh at the thought. Artificial soccer turf first was introduced in the 1970's and actually installed in England at the Queens Park Rangers playing facility in the early 1980's.

It was a polypropylene fiber with a sand infill. It was also very abrasive due to the unforgiving fiber and sand infill. After all, sand is the main ingredient in sand paper. The result was a debacle.

It set back the concept of using artificial soccer turf by 20 years. No one in the sport want any part of it, and rightly so.

Many people, mostly people naive to the industry, referred to anything that was artificial, as Astroturf. Astroturf was even worse than the polypropylene fiber, sand filled artificial soccer turf which was then known as Omni Turf. None the less, both products were terrible for the requirements of soccer or any other sport that required a natural turf feel and look. It was impossible to execute a slide tackle without receiving severe abrasions or even worse injuries. Often players would end up spraining an ankle or severely twisting a knee. These injuries were terrible and could put a player out of action indefinitely, sometimes even ending his or her career.

If all of this were bad enough, the play of the surface was terrible. It was impossible to closely mimic nature turf and control the speed, roll and bounce of the ball. This was crucial to make the game realistic to natural turf. Therefore, players, especially the good ones, would have nothing to do with artificial soccer turf and cursed its very existence.

Then, in the late 1990's, the turf's harshest critics began to notice some of the evolutionary developments that were taking place in the artificial soccer turf industry. And, FIFA, the ruling body of international soccer, became interested in the use of artificial soccer turf for developing countries because they saw it as a way to spread the popularity of the game to these countries and make the sport's world-wide appeal even bigger.

They came up with testing procedures for the criteria of ball bounce, roll, speed and G-max which would have to be met in order for the new artificial soccer turf products to be accepted for international play, including World Cup events. Companies that manufactured artificial soccer turf products that met the testing criteria would be able to be used internationally for soccer events of all kinds. Our Titan line of landscape synthetic turf and multi-use turf is built upon our indestructible workhorse UltraFiber sports turf product. If the football, soccer, lacrosse, band, gym-class and weekend use isn't going to wear out our UltraFiber, we're confident not much else will.

The Titan Core

...is our standard synthetic turf line for landscape, lawns and other non-centric-sport applications. The big difference between our Titan HD and Titan Core is quantity of fiber (face-weight) and ability to create a more natural looking product. Both product lines have the same materials and over all strengths. In some instances, a thicker more dense turf is needed for certain applications, such as a daycare where children will be on their hands and knees. Creating that slightly less impact surface is a great option for the little ones. The Titan Core utilizes three different fibers that all have different shades of green and simulate grass during different germination states. We've even created a root-zone.

Core Fiber Strength:

The strength of our Titan line of turf products is based upon the UltraFiber core ability to withstand extreme punishment, but continue to look natural and functional. Obviously the need for maintenance is all but eliminated.

When creating the Titan turf line, we realized the real function of synthetic turf for landscape, artificial lawn and other applications was to first and foremost look natural, but additionally, to take whole lot of abuse.
With turf construction methods changing very little over the last decade, we decided to take a whole new approach and concentrate on making a product that is made with the best materials available. Then take the best materials and create a high functionality product.

All of the Titan line of turf products utilize 100% US made material and we absolutely will not incorporate fillers or cheap import products.

Eliminate...

The other obvious reasons for using synthetic grass…no maintenance. Well, that's relatively true. For the most part, you need to do nothing, but occasionally you'll need to rake leaves off and or other debris, unless you don't mind the leaves? Ultimately, depending on the application, there's very little maintenance required.

We do like to point out some obvious facts that we believe are actually more beneficial and sometimes overlooked:

Much like the sun ages a person's skin; UV degradation is the Achilles heel of any turf system.

Where turf really made a push, was when the Houston Astro Dome was built and was designed as a fully enclosed stadium.
We got a problem Houston!

Q. How do you get grass to grow without any sunlight?
A. Install this “new” fake grass originally called Chem Grass, and then change the name of the grass to match the baseball team: Houston Astros, hence Astro Turf was born.

The name AstroTurf was branded well after the fact and has been an industry brand since.
